Marvel Cinematic Universe Chronology

This chronology is an attempt to provide a viewing order for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It includes movies, episodes, and Marvel One-Shots, but does not include any tie-in novels or comics. With a few exceptions, most notably the Agent Carter series and Netflix series, everything is mostly presented in order of release date starting with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

While both movies and one-shots are presented in the timeline in italicized text, movies are shown in bold text to distinguish them from one-shots.

NOTES

1. While the prologue and epilogue of Captain America: The First Avenger takes places in 2012, between The Consultant and Marvel’s The Avengers, the main body of the movie is set in the 1940s, during World War II.

2. Agent Carter is set 1 year after Captain America: The First Avenger. Exact placement is difficult as it seems to begin with Carter having very little respect in the SSR, but by the end she has been offered a job with S.H.I.E.L.D. Also, the Agent Carter series features clips from the one-shot, but takes place when Peggy is still a member of the SSR. Until further evidence presents itself, I am taking the position that Carter’s promotion to S.H.I.E.L.D. is delayed, allowing her to be a member of SSR for the series.

3. Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer, Thor, and The Consultant all occur simultaneously.

4. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer is set immediately before Thor.

5. Item 47 is set immediately after The Avengers.

6. Iron Man 3 is set 6 months after The Avengers.

7. Thor: The Dark World is set 1 year after The Avengers.

8. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: “The Well” is set immediately after Thor: The Dark World.

9. Captain America: The Winter Soldier occurs simultaneously with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: “End of the Beginning,” “Turn, Turn, Turn,” “Providence,” and “The Only Light in the Darkness.”

10. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set 2 years after The Avengers.

11. The actual placement of Guardians of the Galaxy is still unclear. I have chosen to place it accordingly to release date, between seasons 1 and 2 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

12. The actual placement of Daredevil is still unclear. “Into the Ring” is set 2 years after the rebuilding began following the events in The Avengers, but it is unknown how long rebuilding began after the movie. Some published timelines place Daredevil after Guardians of the Galaxy, between seasons 1 and 2 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., while others place it concurrent with season 2.

13. Like Daredevil, the placement of Jessica Jones is unclear. It takes place in winter, so I have chosen to place it after the mid-season finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

14. Ant-Man is set several months after Avengers: Age of Ultron.

15. Events following season 3 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are speculation, based on each item’s tentative release date.
